1 Square Game for Kids Video Game Play Instructions

• Starting the Game
  • Press ENTER or touch the welcome screen to bring up the mode select screen.
  • Select to play the game in normal mode (with flooding) or select the no flooding mode for a less challenging game.
  • The level select screen will then load.
    • Levels are unlocked sequentially.
    • Your web browser automatically saves your game progress.
• Game Controls
  • Desktop
    • Jump left by pressing either the A key or the left arrow key.
    • Jump right by pressing either the D key or the right arrow key.
    • You can restart the current level by pressing the R key.
  • Touchscreen devices
    • Use the on screen controls.
    • The lower left corner has a move left button.
    • The lower right corner has a move right button.
  • Controls & indicators
    • When a level first loads the level number is shown in the top center.
    • The upper right corner has 2 buttons for restarting the current level & menu. When the menu button has been pressed it reveals 3 additional buttons for sound control, level select, and returning to the game’s welcome screen.
• Game Play
  • Basics
    • You can play the game with flooding turned on or off. When flooding is turned on you must move quickly to clear the stage before the water level exceeds the lowest square on the board.
    • The goal of this game is to remove all the numbered squares from the board without falling off platform.
      • Each time you step on a numbered square it is decremented by one. When squares reach a value of zero they disappear.
      • You can walk on ordinary platforms an unlimited number of times.
      • Some squares have a colorful border on them.
        • You must walk into the associated frame for your moves to impact the associated colored squares.
        • When you walk into a colored frame you obtain the ability to hit the associated squares, while also retaining your ability to hit other squares.
      • As you advance through the game some levels have a plus or a minus on them.
        • The minus subtracts 1 from all squares.
        • The plus adds 1 to all squares.
        • Squares inside a colored box where you have not collected the associated frame do not change when you step on a plus or a minus.
  • Levels
    • This game has 35 stages which are unlocked sequentially.
      • You can go back and replay previously beat levels an unlimited number of times.
    • Winning vs losing
      • You beat a level by clearing all the number blocks on it.
      • You lose a level if you fall off platform or the water level rises to reach you.
      • This game offers unlimited continues.
  • Tips
    • When a box reaches a value of zero it disappears.
      • If you jump on a box valued at 1 you must be ready to quickly jump off of it.
      • If you are standing on a box that disappears you will fall straight down. If another box is below you then you’ll land on it and decrement it by one.
    • Be sure to consider how + and – operators will impact the remaining boxes and any pathways in place before running into them.
      • If there is a dangling node which is hard to reach and make your way back from (like the far right square on the final level) the key to beating it is to use up all the + signs first & then use the last couple – signs to bring its value down to zero.
    • If you play on normal mode you must move quickly to beat the rising floods.
      • Look at the colored boxes and the highest number value boxes first as those will likely be limiting factors in your ability to beat the level.
      • When you jump from side to side you can also jump up one platform vertically.
        • You can’t jump multiple platforms vertically.
        • Be sure you are not leaving boxes on a high platform if you won’t be able to get back to it after jumping lower.
      • Next consider the lower boxes as those are what the rising flood water will reach first.
