- Game Play
- Merging order
- Tiles only merge if they have the exact same value.
- If there are 3 tiles in a row of the same value then the tiles most in the direction which you move the tiles will merge together.
- If there are 4 tiles in a row of the same value they will merge into 2 tiles both in the direction you moved the tiles.
- When tiles merge their value doubles and one of the placements that had a tile becomes an empty position.
- Movement
- All tiles try to move in the direction you press, though if they are blocked from moving they do not.
- A tile with the value of 2 will appear on the opposite side of the playing field in an open space on each move.
- When no more open spaces exist on the playing field and no adjacent tiles have the same value it is game over.
- Even if you can make a valid move, if you accidentally press a direction which does not create an empty space for another tile to enter the game it will still be game over.
- Strategy
- Consider second and third order effects when moving tiles.
- Where are the tiles of double and quadruple the value to merge into? Move tiles around to where you bring the highest value tiles adjacent to each other.
- Which side is the best side to bring another 2 tile into the game? Press the opposite direction.
- Multiple merges
- If multiple merge options exist consider which will leave the playing field in the best shape for the subsequent moves.
- Try to set up moves which allow you to merge multiple sets of tiles at once.
- Even if tiles are already oriented toward one edge you can still press that same edge again to bring in a spare tile valued at 2 from the opposite side.
- Tiles may appear on any empty space on the opposite edge of the direction you press.
- If there is only one empty space you know where it will appear.
- Total merges
- The title sequence is 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, and 2048.
- Each tile requires merging 2 tiles of the lower value to create it, so…
- 1 merge creates a 4
- 3 merges creates an 8
- 7 merges creates a 16
- 15 merges creates a 32
- 31 merges creates a 64
- 63 merges creates a 128
- 127 merges creates a 256
- 255 merges creates a 512
- 511 merges creates a 1024
- 1023 merges creates a 2048
- Target Audience
