4 In a Row Mania Game for Kids Game Play Instructions

• Starting the Game
  • Left click or tap anywhere on the black screen to load the language selection screen.
  • Pick a flag to choose your preferred language:
    • English
    • German
    • European Spanish
    • French
    • Italian

  • On the welcome screen, choose between the following playing options below the title of the game:
    • Play against the computer.
    • Play against another human player.

• Game Play
  • Starting a game
    • At the welcome screen, pick whether you want to play against a computer opponent or a friend.
    • Once you picked a game mode against the computer, you must pick the following options:
      • Choose a difficulty level.
        • The game’s computer player has 4 different difficulty levels.

        • If you’re new to the game, choose the first computer level to play against.
      • Choose a color.

    • Most of the interface is occupied by the playing field, a 6 tall, 7 wide grid where you place the pieces.
  • Basic rules
    • Players take turns dropping colored pieces into any of the columns on the board.
    • The player who forms a row of 4 pieces first wins the game.
      • The row of 4 can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal (either left or right)
      • If a player somehow creates a row of more than 4 pieces, they also win.
• Strategy
  • The game is a lot more forgiving than our other Connect 4-type game.
    • You can choose between difficulty levels
    • The first difficulty level should be easy enough to defeat after 2 or 3 tries for a beginner.
    • Experienced players can challenge themselves with the computer player at level 4.
  • Start at the center to maximize your options when going first.
    • Starting at the center gives you 5 directions to expand (up, left, right, and diagonal on both sides).
    • Starting at the edge effectively cuts you off from half your options.
  • Create a square of pieces to maximize your options for expansion.
  • Play defensively when you can.
    • See if you can anticipate your opponent’s moves. Block the move that gives them the most advantages.
    • Plan your moves so you can force the player to move toward a disadvantage.
    • It’s even more satisfying if you can create 2 situations where you’re a piece away from winning.
      • Your opponent can only block you in one location, securing your victory.
  • Concentrate all your activity on one side of the board.
    • This strategy is called “owning a column.” Not to be confused with building a row of 4 pieces upwards.
    • Owning a column means having 3 pieces in a row on the same plane.
    • Any piece they add elsewhere will make it possible for you to win.
    • This reduces the size of the playing field as your opponent must keep playing on that side to keep you from winning. This, in turn, makes them easier to trap.
