Challenge Freecell

This is a basic game of Free Cell where players must build all 52 cards into suited ascending foundations within a 30-minute time limit. The reason this game is called “Challenge” is the way the cards are initially dealt makes the game more difficult than an ordinary game of Freecell Solitaire, as the ace and 2 cards are buried on the topmost row on the tableau columns.

  • Move cards while alternating suit color on the tableau.
  • Build foundations starting with the Aces.
  • Use the 4 free cells for temporary card storage.

        • The undo button can be used up to 3 times.
  • Game Play
    • Deal
      • This game uses a single deck of 52 cards.
      • All cards are dealt directly to the tableau face up across 8 columns. 4 columns have 7 cards each and 4 columns have 6 cards each.
      • Cards are dealt in a way that makes the game more difficult than an ordinary game of Freecell, as the 2 and ace cards are buried in the hardest to reach row.
    • Playing
      • Tableau moves
        • You can only move the bottom cards of a stack on the tableau.
          • To move more than one card at a time you need either empty columns on the tableau or empty free cells.
          • Cards you move must be in descending incremental order while alternating suit color.
          • If you want to move a tall stack but do not have enough spaces to move it at once sometimes you can move it by breaking it down into smaller stacks & moving it across other columns on the tableau a bit at a time
        • In this game you can place any card or any sequential descending run of cards that alternates suit colors onto empty columns on the tableau.
          • Some games require a King to be the root card on empty columns, but this game does not.
          • Creating an empty column early in the game and getting many Aces to the foundations early opens up a lot of other play opportunities.
      • General strategy
        • Each time you play the order of the cards in the lower rows of the tableau will change, but the top row will consist of the four 2 cards on the left and the four aces on the right.
        • Try to create a clear row on the right half of the board early to allow at least 1 ace to go to a foundation and to give yourself more flexibility with making other moves.
          • It is better to focus on the right side first for 3 different reasons:
            • each column contains one fewer cards than the left columns do (6 instead of 7)
            • aces automatically move to the foundations & do not need to be laid anywhere else (effectively making it as though each column has 2 fewer cards)
            • aces must be laid to the foundations before any other cards can be laid
        • Move the free cell cards into stacks in such a way that you are building sequential tableau stacks which start with the king or start with a card where you can lay many other cards onto it.
        • Keep working back and forth across the left and right side of the board so you get most of the ace and 2 cards to the foundations early and open up all the remaining play options.
      • Building foundations
        • Once cards have been played to a foundation you can not bring them back into the game.
        • The game automatically moves some cards to the foundations when it knows you will not need to use those cards to make sequential runs on the tableau.
        • You can also manually move some other cards to the foundations to enable other plays.
      • Free cells
        • You can store cards temporarily in the free cells to enable other plays, but should try to keep those cells empty most of the time.
        • The free cells combine with empty columns to allow you to make large moves. For example, if you had an empty column you were not moving cards to and had 4 empty free cells you could move 9 cards at a time (2*4+1).
      • The game offers an undo moves button which you can use up to 3 times.
    • Scoring
      • You score 10 points for each card laid to a foundation, yielding a maximum base score of 520 points.
      • You also earn points for how much time you have remaining when the foundations are completed.
        • Each second is worth 50 points.
        • Most of your score will come from time since having 11 seconds remaining when you beat the 30-minute time limit will yield more points from time than the cards.
        • If you beat the game in 6 minutes you would have a 72,000 point time bonus.
  • Target Audience
    • The game is suited for players who like difficult Freecell Solitaire card games.
      • While this game is called Challenge Freecell it is still not too difficult. To increase the difficult of Freecell you can try playing other games with fewer free cells in them.
      • In addition to regular Freecell we offer Three CellTwo Cell, & One Cell.
      • Stronghold Solitaire is a game similar to Freecell where you start off with 4 free cells & get 1 fewer free cell on each round of the game. One big difference with Stronghold Solitaire is you do not need to alternate suit color on the tableau.
    • The game has no adult themed content.
