What’s This About Averages
Mean, median, and mode all describe statistical averages or central tendency. They outline ways to describe the “middle value” of a set of numbers. Each method varies and describes a different sort of average:
The mean is the average you’re likely most familiar with. You find it by adding up all the numbers of the range, then dividing it by the number of items in the data set.
The median is the number at the middle of the set. To find the median, arrange the numbers from smallest to biggest. Choose the number at the very middle of the set. If you can’t find a “middle number,” and two middle numbers and divide them by 2.
The mode is the number that appears the most times in the set. In really large sets, this is the number you’re most likely to find. In small sets like in our game, it’s usually the one that appears twice.
The range represents the difference between the highest and lowest values in the set. Although it measures the variation and distribution within the data set, it’s often analyzed alongside the averages. On its own, the range can be misleading if the differences in the highest and lowest values are large.
