How to Play
Run around and jump collecting coins. Avoid getting hit by porcupines.
- Starting the Game
- Click the wooden button with the green triangle on it in the center of the game’s welcome screen to start the game.
- The welcome screen has music and sound control buttons in the upper right corner.
- Your web browser automatically stores your high score. Your high score is on a per-level basis rather than cumulative across levels.
- Game Controls
- Desktop
- Use the left or right arrow keys to move left or right.
- Use the up arrow key to jump.
- Touchscreen
- Use the on screen controls.
- Left and right buttons are in the lower left corner.
- The jump button is in the lower right corner.
- The game has a pause button in the upper left corner.
- Game Strategy
- Dying
- You can fall from the top of the screen to the bottom without taking any damage, but you die as soon as you are touched by any porcupine.
- Porcupine Count
- As you collect coins more porcupines fill the level.
- When a new porcupine is about to enter the level there is a red exclamation point near where it will soon appear.
- The porcupine can appear a bit away from where the warning mark is shown, and it is rather frustrating to die that way, so it is best to run away from the exclamation point as soon as you see it.
- Relative movement
- You tend to move a bit faster than the porcupines and can jump a bit higher than they typically do, however in most cases it usually makes sense to not go directly at them but to keep running away from them.
- Screen wrap
- In this game the screen wraps.
- You and the porcupines can get to the right edge of the screen from the left side or the left side of the screen by moving right from the right edge.
- As long as you keep moving in a particular direction so too will the porcupines.
- This means the game is far easier to beat if you keep wrapping around the screen rather than jumping back to get a coin.
- If a coin is just left of you and you have been running right it can make sense to keep running right toward the tail end of a trail of porcupines and then get the coin on your next wrap around rather than looping back against the direction the porcupines are moving.
- Movement
- Certain platforms are not reachable directly from the platform beneath them, but instead require you to jump across to an adjacent platform which is vertically above the lower platform
- In some cases the tops of porcupines can still bump into you on jumps they could not fully make.
- Computer AI movement
- The AI in this game has the porcupines try to follow your path rather than trying to directly capture you. So long as you stay in motion and do not run over your own prior path while porcupines are not on it you will not die.
- Bug
- When you beat the first level it still says “level failed.”
- Clicking the play button on that error will bring you to the second level.
- The game has a second level where you collect 35 coins instead of 30. The platform layout is different on the second level, but the same screen wrap and always move right technique works on it.
- Target Audience
- This is a fun game for people of all ages.
- The game starts off easy, making it fun for younger kids, though they might get frustrated as they advance and there are 4 or 5 porcupines in the level.
- The difficulty level ramps quickly, making it challenging and fun for older kids and adults if they do not realize how the AI is programmed. Once you know how the AI is coded the game is ridiculously easy.
- There are no adult themes in the game.
