    • Your points are shown alongside your dominoes.
  • Dominoes Rules & Game Play
    • The player with the highest number domino piece plays first.
      • For example, a double six is the highest.
      • The highest domino piece is played.
    • The next player matches one of the dominoes if possible.
      • For example, if there is a six on the board and you have a six, you can play this piece.
      • You can only play the open ends. There are only ever two open ends.
      • If you can’t make a match of dots to a piece on the board, you pass.
    • The round ends when no a player runs out of tiles or one can make a move.
      • The winner of the round is the player with the least pips remaining.
    • The rounds continue until the target number of points are reached.
  • Scoring Points
    • At the end of each round, the player with the least number of pips remaining receives points from the other players.
      • The winner of the round gets the total number of pips remaining from each player, minus their own remaining pips.
      • If you win and have two pips remaining and your opponent has ten pips remaining, then your receive eight points.
  • Strategy
    • Whichever number you hold the most of is your strong suit. A suit is a number of pips. A piece with two sixes belongs to one suit, namely six, whereas a piece with a six and a three belongs to two suits, six and three respectively.
      • Play your strong suit first. Your opponent will likely have fewer of these pieces, making it harder for them to match.
    • Your opponent will likely play their strong suit, too. If possible, play a piece that will block them. For example, if your opponent opens with a double six, six should be their strong suit. If you have the option, you’ll want to avoid leaving a six on an end.
    • You want to play on every turn and avoid having to pass. You’ll be less likely to pass if you hold many different suits. When playing your strong suit or any other suit for that matter, consider what will leave you the most options.
    • If you notice some players are getting skipped on a particular number keep leaning into using your dominoes which can leave that number at the end of the pile. And if you think the game is about to be stuck from nobody being able to lay any more tiles then you want to lay the tiles with the highest pip count on them so you have fewer pips left in your hands. Getting rid of your highest number dominoes helps you 2 different ways:
      • It makes you more likely to have the lowest remaining number if all players can not lay.
      • It makes your opponent score fewer points if they do beat you.

Trivia Time: Dominoes Tile Games and Domino’s Pizza

Some people spell the word dominoes without the E in it, though the correct version of the word has the e. Each month roughly 100,000 people look for dominoes games (rules, sets, playing, etc.) online and about 80% of searchers spell it the correct way.

Roughly 1 in 10 search queries are misspelled in spite of popular search engines like Google and Bing offering search autocompletion tools. The ratio for this game is double that. And the reason spelling errors are more common for this game is the famous pizza chain which over 20 million people search for monthly. The brand awareness of the large pizza chain which is hundreds times more popular than the game dictates how many people believe the tile-based board game is spelled.

Do You Want a Piece of Pizza?

The pizza chain was founded in 1960 by Tom and James Monaghan. The company sells an average of 3 million pizzas a day across 17,800 stores in 90 countries. Someone sure makes a lot of dough.

Domino’s Pizza went public in in July of 2004 at $14 a share and in July 2021 their shares traded at $463.48, for a gain of over 3,250% in 17 years. Alternatively stated … someone sure made a lot of dough. 😀

Yo! Noid: a Surprisingly Fun Game

The gaming industry crashed in the early 1980s as a lot of Atari games were bad. Millions of cartridges were buried. Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s many companies once again created video games as part of their marketing mix. McDonalds had multiple Famicom & Nintendo games (Donald Land & M.C. Kids) while Domino’s had a jumping platform game named Yo! Noid which was released in 1990. The Yo! Noid game was well enough received a fan made a sequel in 2017 as part of a game jam.
