Rock Paper and Scissors

Rock, Paper, and Scissors is an ancient game first played in ancient China. The game took on its modern form in Japan, where it was named Jankenpon, which eventually led to its alternate name in the U.S., Rochambeau. Take this game to the digital age in this appropriately retro-styled tribute.

  • Play the standard game where you pick either rock, paper, or scissors against a computer opponent.
  • Spice things up by betting real game money against the computer.
  • Simulate the challenge between rock, paper, and scissors as they bounce around an arena.

          • The pieces will, sometimes, briefly reach a point where no piece is more dominant than the other.

          • The game ends when only one type of piece remains.
  • Target Audience
    • The game is suited for players who like the folk game Rock-Paper-Scissors or Rochambeau.
    • While there is a betting mode in the game, no real money is exchanged.
      • Besides this, the game has no adult themed content.

A Time-Tested Formula

Modern strategy gaming owes a lot to Rock-Paper-Scissors. The game is the simplest version of a formula that, when scaled up, creates much of the competitive balance. Most combat games create character classes that are strong against some types of opponents but not against others. Even more complex games spice it up by making the advantages and drawbacks more pronounced in various contexts.

The end result creates a lot of variety in the game. You don’t just stick to just archers or just swordsmen. Instead, you create war parties and armies with variety. Moreover, because the weaknesses change in context, it forces players to change their strategies and never rely on just one thing.

Check out this article for more details on this formula and examples of it in action.
