This game is a great way to introduce chess to kids who think the game is too complex.

  • Select a piece to see where you can move it.
  • Move pieces individually & work in combination to capture the competing king.
  • There are no move limits, but in some cases when certain pieces have been moved to the wrong position the level becomes unbeatable without first resetting it.

Chess Move Capture the King Online Game Play Instructions

How to Play

Move pieces around the playing field just like you would a normal chess board and capture your opponent’s King to win the game.

  • Starting the Game
    • Press the play button on the game’s welcome screen to start the game.
    • This will bring up the level select screen.
      • Each level needs beat to unlock the subsequent levels.
      • Unlocked levels are in a blue to purple hue (depending on your monitor settings) and locked levels are gray.
      • Your game progress is automatically stored in your local web browser.
  • Game Controls
    • Playing
      • The bottom of the game contains three buttons: level select menu, sound control, and restart level.
        • You get unlimited plays on this game, so if you make a mistake press the restart level button.
      • Move pieces around the playing field to make it so that one of the pieces can reach the red king.
      • All game pieces move the same way they do on a traditional chess board.
        • For players who are unfamiliar with chess, traditional chess piece movements are shown below & clicking on a piece will reveal what squares it can move to.
        • One thing to note is pieces fall from the force of gravity. If you are not placing a piece on a square with something directly beneath it then the piece will fall until it hits something else.
        • One each level you start with a limited number of pieces rather than having all pieces available.
      • In many cases pieces will need to play off one another to solve the puzzles.
        • In most puzzles you need a piece to stand on another piece to unlock the ability to traverse the level.
        • Be careful when moving pieces off of platforms unless you are sure there is a way to move them back to higher levels if needed.
      • Yellow walls
        • You can stand on thin and thick yellow walls.
        • Your pieces may move through thin yellow walls, though they typically can not move through thick yellow walls unless it is done diagonally through an opening in the edge.
      • As you get into further levels you have to grab keys to unlock squares as part of the levels.
      • Pawns can be promoted if they reach the top of the playing field.
        • When a pawn is promoted you can choose what sort of piece to promote it to.
        • If you choose the wrong piece type it will be impossible to beat certain levels.
      • The dimensions of the playing field do not match a traditional chess board.
        • Rather than an 8 by 8 square the dimensions on this game are 16 squares wide by 10 squares tall.
    • Scoring
      • When you capture the competing red king with any one of your blue pieces the game is beat.
    • Mouse
      • Click on a piece to select it. This will highlight what squares you can move it to.
        • If you highlight a square which has nothing underneath it then your piece will first move to that square and then fall until it touches something.
      • Repeat the process until you have moved your pieces to capture the red king.
    • Touchscreen
      • Use your finger like a mouse and tap on the pieces you want to highlight and move.

Strategies

  • This game requires thinking multiple steps ahead to beat.

    • You can also ask for help in the comments below if you are stuck on a particular level.
  • One of the biggest obstacles in this game is gravity.
